Artist Spotlight: Dennis Livinai
For Dennis Livinai, art is not simply something he creates. It is the way he experiences the world. Every brushstroke is an exploration of memory, movement, colour, and imagination, transforming fleeting moments into vibrant visual stories that invite viewers to look beyond what they can see.
Born in Okapa, Eastern Highlands Province in 1971, Dennis spent his childhood between Papua New Guinea and Canberra, Australia. While he once dreamed of becoming a pilot, it was during these early years that he discovered another way to explore the world.
After graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Papua New Guinea in 1993, Dennis developed a distinctive artistic style that blends abstract expression with realism. His paintings are alive with colour, flowing lines, and symbolic forms inspired by Papua New Guinea's landscapes, Birds of Paradise, flora, fauna, and the spiritual connections that weave through everyday life. Rather than simply recreating what he sees, Dennis paints what he feels and imagines, describing his work as
"interpretations, fragments, glimpses and flashes of memory and thoughts in my mind's eye."

This simple yet powerful statement captures the essence of Dennis's creative philosophy. Over the course of his career, Dennis has made a lasting contribution to Papua New Guinea's creative landscape. His artistic talent can be seen across Port Moresby through numerous public art commissions, including the restoration and painting of iconic Birds of Paradise sculptures, the Koki Turtle sculptures, Adventure Park installations, and the monumental sculptures created to welcome world leaders during the 2018 APEC Summit. His work has become part of the city's identity, connecting communities through public art that celebrates Papua New Guinea's unique culture and natural heritage.
Alongside his public commissions, Dennis has exhibited his work since the late 1980s and received recognition early in his career, including First Prize at the Waigani Annual Arts Exhibition for his painting The Bowman. These achievements reflect a career built on creativity, dedication, and a continual desire to evolve as an artist.
Today, Dennis is a Resident Fine Artist at the Centre for Arts and Innovation (CAI), where he continues to produce original artworks, mentor emerging creatives, and contribute to exhibitions and cultural initiatives both locally and internationally. His work embodies CAI's vision of preserving Papua New Guinea's cultural heritage while inspiring innovation through contemporary artistic practice.
